Being in the spotlight is not always easy. Nearly all celebrities, at some point in their career, desire a more private life. No one knows that more than Cobie Smulders. She is probably best known for her roles as Robin Scherbatsky on the television series How I Met Your Mother. You may also remember her as Nick Fury’s sidekick Maria Hill in many of the Marvel Universe movies such as Iron Man and The Avengers.
At age 25 Smulders had enjoyed success as a television actor, and in movies. She was a rising star on her way up. Smulders also had to begin her fight against cancer. In the spring of 2008, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. It threatened to end her fertility and possibly her life.
As she struggled to come to grips with the possibility of not having a family of her own, she did everything she could to fight the cancer. Surgery to remove the tumors was necessary, but only part of her solution. She studied her condition intensely and decided to go RAW. A drastic change in diet for her. She gave up cheese and carbs, two things she loved. Smulders also started meditating and loved being at the yoga studio. She saw crystal healers, acupuncturists, naturopaths, chiropractors, and anyone else she thought that might help her beat cancer.
Eventually she was given clean bill of health. Though she doesn’t know exactly what helped the most, Smulders was thankful for all of it. She won her fight with cancer and hopes that anyone else battling the terrible disease will as well. Today she has two beautiful baby girls, something she was fearful would never happen. Although she considers herself lucky, she says that she will always live with the fear that the cancer could return. A common emotion most survivors experience. In one article she wrote some advice, “If you are going through something like this, I urge you to look at all your options. To ask questions. To learn as much as you can about your diagnosis. To breathe. To ask for help. To cry and to fight.”
Cobie Smulders is a woman with courage.
