Trichotillomania (pronounced: trik-oh-till-oh-may-nee-ah), or TTM, is also known as Hair Pulling Disorder.
This is characterized by chronic hair pulling and can sometimes lead to permanent hair loss. This disorder is one of several Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors, or BFRBs, which include different types of obsessive disorders.
Causes and Prevalence
Many people suffer from TTM without even knowing what it is. But this is fairly common. 1-2 in 50 people experience this in their lifetime, with common onset in late childhood/early adolescence. In childhood, boys and girls develop this rather evenly, but by adulthood, 90% of those affected are women. The most common areas that people pull from are the scalp, eyelashes, and eyebrows. This condition can come and go with stressful events or other reasons.
There is often an intense negative stigma with such disorders, and BFRBs and TTM specifically can cause a lot of shame in the person who has it. Many people retreat from normal life or avoid situations where they might be “discovered” for having this disorder.
